35 years of Techne Consulting
November 6, 2021 Techne Consulting celebrated 35 years of consulting and software development in the fields of environment and energy. In these 35 years we have worked with leading energy and environmental Italian institutions (Ministry of Environment, Regions, National and Regional Environmental Protection Agencies) and with research institutions (ENEA, CNR, ISPRA, universities, etc.), We participated in the most important international working groups on air pollution (from CORINAIR 85 project), we have published many original scientific papers that have often anticipated the problems that would emerge in subsequent years. Among other things we have been pioneers in stressing the importance of an integrated approach to energy and air quality planning indicating the possible negative influences on air quality of the combustion of solid biomass. We also developed the first model of assessment of pollutant emissions from ships in the specific Transport programme under 4th Research and Technology Development Framework Programme of the European Commission.
Task Force on Emissions Inventories and Projections 2024
The technical director of Techne Consulting, presented at TFEIF annual meeting in May, a work on Emissions of ships in Liguria ports: trend, COVID & NECA Area implementation.
Techne consulting E2Port model was applied for ships in port emissions estimates. The model uses Tier3 methodology, based on installed engine power and time spent in the different navigation phases in port (hotelling and manoeuvring) for each ships movement. Data on ships movements by ship were provided by port authorities and engine power was obtained from the E2Port database or, only where missing, from gross tonnage (GT) using GB power vs GT functions. The emissions are evaluated in 2021 and in future scenario for the years 2025 and 2030.
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has designated the North Sea and the Baltic Sea as NOx Emission Control Area (NECA) starting from January 1, 2021 onwards. The impact of a future extension to Mediterranean Sea of NECA is discussed.
I-CHANGE research results at the EXPAPER meeting in Livorno
Recently Techne Consulting presented some results of iCHANGE project at the EXPAPER 2023 conference. EXPAPER is an annual conference that brings together a group of experts and representatives of companies, industrial trade associations, research bodies and universities that deal with the emissions of pollutants and greenhouse gases from passenger and goods transport by road, sea and air at national and local level. Carlo Trozzi, technical director of Techne Consulting, partner of iCHANGE, made a presentation on "Carbon footprint and environmental footprint from road traffic in the living labs of the Horizon 2020 I-CHANGE project".

I-CHANGE - Apportionment of carbon footprint and greenhouse gases
Recently Techne Consulting, with the collaboration of other partners of the I-CHANGE Horizon 2020 consortium, finalised the report “Apportionment of carbon footprint and greenhouse gases” as one result of the research activity Benchmarking behavioral change: apportionment of carbon and environmental footprint.
The report describes the methodologies applied to compute carbon footprint and short-lived climate forcers emissions using driving forces data gathered within I-CHANGE Living Labs activities and traffic numerical simulations.

GEIA 20th Conference
GEIA 20th Conference was held on 2023 June 21-2, hosted by Royal Belgian Institute for Space Aeronomy in Bruxelles (Belgium) The GEIA: Global Emissions InitiAtive is a community effort dedicated to emissions information exchange and competence building, created in 1990 to improve our understanding of air quality and climate. About 160 experts from all the world attended the conference. Our Technical Director Carlo Trozzi presented a poster on Integrated evaluation of air pollutants and greenhouse gases emissions in the framework of the I-CHANGE Living Labs experiences.
